About Turkey
The fantastic country of Turkey features wonderful beach resorts, sparkling blue seas, never-ending sunshine and a staggeringly beautiful coastline. The people are also incredibly friendly and the food is out of this world. It is also a land with a magnificent past, and everywhere you turn, you stumble across relics of ancient civilisations.
Turkey is the only secular Muslim country among all the Muslim countries in the world.
Turkey is a young country in more ways than one: over two-thirds of the Turkish population is under age thirty. Turkey is physically one of the highest countries in the world, the average height is 6,000 feet and is one of the few agriculturally self-sufficient countries in the world.
More than two-thirds of Turkey's borders are coastline, these stretch for fully 6,000 km (3,730 miles) along the Aegean, eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea. Turkey is one of the riches countries in species of flowers due to its varied landscape and climate. There are approximately 9,000 species of which 3,000 are native. In Europe there are only 11,500 species.
Mount Ararat, the highest mountain in Turkey, is believed to be the place where Noah's Ark landed. The Seven Churches of the Apocalypse were all located in Anatolia - Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. St. Nicholas - today's Santa Claus, was born in Patara (next to Kalkan) and lived as the bishop of Myra in Demre (also near Kalkan).
History of Turkey
"Anatolia" means "east" in Greek. In the Turkish language it means "the land full of mothers". The oldest known shipwreck was excavated near Ka? (a coastal town next to Kalkan).
King Midas, son of Gordius, the last and the most famous of the Phrygian kings, ruled over the whole of Asia Minor in the 6th century BC.
Alexander the Great embarked on a campaign against the Persians in 334 BC crossing the Dardanelles, occupying Gordium (this is where the fabled cutting of the Gordian knot took place) and defeating Darius the Third.
Two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World stood in Anatolia - the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.
There really is something here for everyone - now popular amongst thousands of holidaymakers who are looking for sun, sea, sand and stunning scenery. Whether it is lazing on the beach or scuba diving, or haggling for souvenirs, exploring a quiet hilltop village or dancing the night away.
If you get bored of the beach there are many places of interest to visit including the Lycian rock tombs at Dalyan and the hot springs of Pamukkale, a UNESCO World Heritage site. There's also much more to experience in Turkey, like visiting archaeological sites, taking a trip to a hamam for a traditional Turkish bath, an evening of belly dancing, drinking raki, eating real Turkish delights or haggling for a wide range of bargains, from leather to jewellery.
As well as offering great value for money, Turkey is also very convenient, as you can fly from 17 regional airports across the UK to 4 Turkish airports, getting you closer to your destination. Flight times from UK are approximately 4hrs.
There are 3 different and distinct areas of Turkey for you to choose from - the Aegean coast, the Lycian coast and the Mediterranean coast.
With narrow streets and a mass of whitewashed houses, Bodrum is one of the prettiest resorts on the Aegean. This cosmopolitan resort has a vibrant nightlife, as does its sister resort, Gumbet.
On the Mediterranean coast you will find resorts like Marmaris , a town surrounded by stunning scenery, boasting plenty of bars and clubs as well as Turkey's largest marina. Turkey's third city, Izmir is a centre of commerce yet is surrounded by some of the most magnificent coastline in Turkey.
About Kalkan and Kas
Kalkan
The historic town of Kalkan is an enchanting place and one of the most beautiful locations along Turkey's gorgeous Lycian Coast. With the absence of mass tourism, Kalkan remains a charming and unspoiled haven of lush nature, brilliant blue crystal-clear sea, historic architecture, ancient history and warm traditional Turkish hospitality.
Kas
A delightful village with a Bohemian atmosphere, Kas offers secluded bays and two pebble beaches, whilst from the harbour, local boats will ferry you to secluded inlets. As the day closes, alfresco dining at a restaurant overlooking the harbour or the illuminated hillside rock tombs is the most pleasant way to spend the evening.
